Book Description June lived in a kingdom where there were only humans her size. They were around 4 inches tall, and they had their own version of humans' measurement systems. The king had long since decreed the land outside of the kingdom as "Forbidden Land". He didn't prevent people from leaving the kingdom, however, as long as they were of age. Those who wished to leave were sent through a tunnel and were allowed to exit through the gate, the only safe exit out of the kingdom. Only a few humans, or "giants", as June's people called them, were allowed to enter the kingdom a year. These visitors were usually of importance. June didn't like the way her life was going. To anyone else, she had a great life! And it was true, she did. But she was dissatisfied with it. She was 16 and liked hanging out at the library a lot, but it was summer, and her parents complained about her not having a job. So, she ran away. People who'd committed major crimes were often exiled from the kingdom. They were sent through a dangerous exit out of the kingdom with a wagon containing some clothes, blankets, and some food. Within a few days, all the food would be eaten, and either a giant would find them, or the forest would kill them. June planned to hide in a criminal's wagon and escape the kingdom that way. Her parents would never be able to find her. But she soon realized why that exit was unsafe. It opened into the Giant Forest, and the elements nearly took her life. Just as she closed her eyes and accepted her fate, she met Christopher, a giant who claimed he'd been on a date with his boyfriend and used the forest as a shortcut back to his house. His outfit was fancy but slightly wrinkled and dirty from the forest. She accepted his help out of the forest, although she felt his story was suspicious. He took her to his house and nursed her back to health. Christopher showed her the world beyond her kingdom in a week, and she found out why it was called the Forbidden Land. She never wanted to leave!
