Chapter 22-An Unusual Class Rosalia looked around and stared at the ceiling, that looked like it was covered with stars. She took a seat at the Ravenclaw table and prepared to watch The Sorting Ceremony. She saw the first years standing in a bunch and waiting for their names to be called. After a few sortings, a girl sat next to her. "Hi!" the girl greeted. "I'm Cathy Aman! What's your name? Are you in your first year?" "I'm Rosalia Estelle. And no, I'm in my second year." Rosalia said, shyly. "Okay! Is Hogwarts nice?" "Very." "How many feast do we have each year?" "There's the Start of Term feast, Halloween, Christmas—" But Dumbledore stood, silencing everyone, even without words. "Welcome!" said Dumbledore. "Welcome to another year at Hogwarts. I have a few things to say to you all..." He first started about the dementors, who unfortunately would be guarding Hogwarts. "That's horrible! How are we supposed to learn with them floating around?" Rosalia whispered to Luna, who was also next to her. Then, with a happier note, he informed them that there will be two new professors: Hagrid (who was also the Keeper of the Keys), and Lupin (though there wasn't much of an applause; only those who were in the compartment with him clapped hard). Hagrid would be the Care of Magical Creatures teacher, though Rosalia wouldn't be having that class since it was an elective and first and second years didn't have those choices, and Lupin would be the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. "I hope he'll be better than Lockhart," Rosalia whispered to Luna. And so, the feast began. It was a very happy feast indeed. Cathy turned out to be a nice friend and she and Rosalia shared their hobby of reading. After the feast ended, they went to their own dorms. Rosalia still shared a dorm with Everleigh and Luna, but there was another student she never met. When she first entered the dorm, someone was already there, and surprisingly greeted Luna. "Hi, Luna!" "Hi, Indianna." "Who is she?" Rosalia asked. "My cousin." "I didn't know you had a cousin." "You know now." "Hi!" Indianna greeted. "I'm Indianna Lovegood. And you?" "Rosalia Estelle," "Nice name!" "Thanks, let's get to bed though..." And so, Rosalia changed into her pajamas, brushed her teeth, and went to bed, hoping that tomorrow would be good. The next day, Rosalia woke up, and went to the Great Hall for some breakfast. Luna was already there, so she took a seat next to her. "What class do we have first?" Luna took her timetable out. "Defense Against the Dark Arts," Luna announced. "Ooh. I hope Professor Lupin teaches well!" After breakfast, the two headed to the Defense Against the Dark Arts, took out their supplies (books, quills, and parchment paper), and talked for a bit. Soon, Professor Lupin entered the classroom and looked around with a smile. "I see you're all expecting theory," he observed. "Well, no. We're having a practical class." Everyone stared; they never had a practical class when it came to Defense Against the Dark Arts—at least not when you count the chaotic Cornish Pixies that Professor Lockhart released the year before. They all stuffed their books back into their bags and followed Professor Lupin to the staff room, which was completely empty. "So," Lupin said. "Today, we will be learning about imps. Who here can tell me what exactly is an imp?" Rosalia's hand, to nobody's surprise, shot up in the air. "Yes, Rosalia?" "The imp is a magical beast found only in Great Britain and Ireland. It is known for its sense of slapstick humor." "Yes, indeed! Now, who can tell me how to deal with an imp?" Rosalia's hand rose up yet again. "Why don't we give someone else a chance?" Rosalia lowered her hand, slightly disappointed. "No one?" Lupin said to the crowd of silent people. "Alright, then. Rosalia, what was going to be your answer?" "The Knockback Jinx, sir," Rosalia said. "The incantation is Flipendo. After you've successfully knocked the imp backward, you can put it inside a cage." "Yes, that is correct. I'm sure you have learned the spell, but I'm assuming none of you have practiced it with an imp. Is that correct?" Many students nodded. "Alright. Yesterday, I found imps flying around, so, I decided to use it for my second-year classes. Let me demonstrate how. Luna, would you be so kind to help me open the cage?" Luna took a step forward and Rosalia heard a few sniggers, "Loony Lovegood." Luna gently opened a cage with an imp, and it stepped out of the cage and looked around. "Now, you've got to remember the spell. It is Flipendo. Now, watch." Lupin raised his wand and yelled, "Flipendo!" The imp was knocked backwards into a wall and seemed dazed. Lupin quickly took it by its feet, and threw it back into its cage. "Now, everyone. Without wands, let's say the incantation: Flipendo!" "Flipendo," everyone said at once. "Great! Now, let's practice! Who would like to try first?" (Rest in N&C)
Again, Rosalia shot her hand up. "Alright. Forward, please, Rosalia." She took a step and raised her wand. Lupin approached another cage, and released the imp inside, which seemed delighted at its freedom. "Flipendo!" Rosalia bellowed. The imp was thrown back and was in a daze. She ran off to the imp, grabbed it by its legs, and threw it back in its cage. "Wonderful! Next!" Soon, class was dismissed, but not before Lupin said— "Five points for every time someone tackles an imp. Rosalia gets ten for answering my questions, and another five for tackling an imp...." Rosalia beamed with pride. After class, she and Luna had time to talk before their next class. "He was great!" Rosalia said approvingly. "He was!" Luna agreed. ✧✦✧ Author's note: Chapter 22!
