Hooray! should have posted this first haha :') oki here we go: name: Peri (as in Persephone heh) pronouns: she/her BACKSTORY: Peri is the daughter of a nobleman, so she has a very gentle lifestyle in which she gets most everything she wants. She's happy, at first, but when she turns twelve and starts venturing into the town on her own, she begins to see the kind of lives that others are experiencing. They go to school and have friends and crushes and extended families and neighbors, and Peri has none of these things. The only people really in her life are her somewhat distant parents and her tutors. Her parents love her, but she begins to feel a crushing loneliness that can't be healed with just their caring. One day, the weight of this all begins to be too much and she runs out of the house and down the long road that leads out of town. She stumbles and scrapes her hands badly on the rough dirt, and cries out in pain. A head pokes out of the blueberry bushes that are apparently just there and Peri realized it's a girl around her age, one that she's seen around the town on quite a few occasions. The girl introduces herself as Cordelia and brings Peri back to her house to patch up her cuts. In the coming days, the two become fast friends as they explore the outskirts of the town together and talk about their favorite books and stories. One of Peri's favorites is of the underworld, and the hidden entrance into it that is a gaping pitch black pit that appears in the middle of the night. Flash forward 6 years and they are inseparable. But nothing good can last forever. Cordelia is diagnosed with a fatal illness and dies within two weeks. Peri is heartbroken, knowing that she can't live any longer without her best friend. So she decides to find the entrance to the underworld, in hopes that she can retrieve Cordelia's soul and get her best friend back. It takes weeks to find. Once she does, she's so worn from her journey and passes out, slipping right into the depths of the darkness. It's daytime when she wakes (here's where this scene is). She can see the sun shining clearly overhead, but it seems that nothing in the above world can see her. They're just trails of light, souls, to her eyes. Then she fully realizes where she is. She looks down to see half a heart on her chest. (oki little context that I can't fit into the story with the same tone: most people go to the underworld the normal way, and their whole souls go. But because Peri's alive and has entered the underworld, only half of her soul was claimed. That's also why she has ribs and a skull thing on the outside of her body.) She reaches up to feel her face, but her fingers brush over cold bone instead of sunlight-warmed skin.
