Kio Silkwing-nightwing, with silkwing base Dragonet An array of black and rainbow, strewn across her body Is average size Lives in Pyrrhia Kio’s story prologue Kio ran through the sand and kicked up dust, giggling as her brother chased her around. “Can't catch me!” she teased, sticking her tongue out at him. “Oh, yeah I can!” He called back, grinning and gaining a burst of speed. The sand kingdom was one of the most beautiful sights to behold, the vast open dunes glittering along with her scales in the sunlight. She was a silkwing-nightwing hybrid, along with her brother, and her metamorphosis was soon. After running for what seemed like hours, Kio stopped in her tracks, causing her brother to run into her. “Who are you?” said a gruff voice from in front of them. It was a sandwing, covered in scars and battle armor. He towered above them, his menacing glare staring into Kio and her brother, Skipper’s eyes. Kio jerked her neck backwards, looking at where they came from. “Skip, I think we went too far from mum” she whispered, eyes wide. Skipper nodded. “Well, up you go.” the sandwing said, grabbing them by the tails, tying them up one by one and putting cloth around their mouths so they wouldn't make a sound. “You’ll sell for a handsome price in the marketplace” he said, showing his chipped teeth and walked into the entrance to a place full of bustling yellow sand-colored dragons with barbs on the ends of their tails, busy stalls, and loud noises. Chapter 1 Kio tried to wiggle free from the bindings that trapped her in place. “Help!” she cried, only to hear that her plea had been muffled by the cloth on her muzzle. The bustle of the marketplace seemed to knock out her brother, his breathing was steady and his eyes were closed. The sandwing with the gruff voice finally stopped at an empty stall, the walls lined with curiosities, scavenger language guides, bottles filled with a strange light, gemstones. But what scared Kio most of all was the severed wings and weapons on the back wall. She wished with all her might that her wings would suddenly grow, breaking the rope around her. But she wasn't surprised when that didn't happen. The sandwing entered the stall and hung the siblings up on a wall. Then, he took out price tags from a drawer next to them and wrote down: $243, then placed the tags on the rope around them. Then Kio slept. She dreamt of the sand and her mum, calling to her and Skipper, but her words were washed away by the sandstorm growing behind her. In her dream, she thought she heard her brother's voice. “Kio, Kio! Wake up, Kio!” her eyes shot open, skipper’s cloth and bindings had been removed, and a new rope was hung around his neck. At the end of the rope, a nearly all-black hivewing with a grin spread across her face. “I think I’ll take that one too,” she said, pointing to Kio. “hmph! Hmhmmmngh!” was all that could be heard as the sandwing turned and grabbed the rope around Kio and cut it loose, causing her to fall to the ground. He fastened a rope like Skipper’s around her neck as the hivewing handed over what looked like a stack of paper. The sandwing counted it, grinned, then cut Kio’s cloth and handed the hivewing the rope. Chapter 2 more to come
