I haven’t seen you since like spring!” My best friend, Adalena rushes up to me. For some reason, I cringe when she says my name. I don’t have a clue why. I’ve always loved my name, how it echoed fiercely when I said it, but right now it sounds like a lie. “Oh hey Adalena! I’m sorry, it’s probably because we went to Cuba to see my relatives.” “Oh, uhh…” She replied. “What’s wrong?” I prod carefully. “Your um cousin, you know, the one who’s, uh, trans.” She says trans like it’s a bad word. “Yeah, what about her?” “My mom said he is a bad influence on you and he is too young and should stay a boy.” “Well, your mom is wrong.” I say, biting my lip. Adalena never shared this with me before. I love Marriana, my cousin. She is so kind, and loves unicorns. She is 8, transfem, and an awesome little, and I say this with passion, GIRL! It’s not hard to understand, people, Mari, is a GIRL! “Well Tatyanna, I have to kinda agree with my mom. I mean, it’s really weird that people can just be whatever gender they want, like Mario is a boy! He was born a boy. It’s not healthy for him to dress in unicorn dresses.” “Ada, MARI is a girl.
