:: Chapter Three, continued :: Iphnie sighed as she walked over the shore, her dragonfly wings drooping. The ocean was a greenish gray. It matched her current mood. She was barefoot, in a plain white dress (which, under other circumstances, would be considered odd for the Queen’s advisor), and her light blonde hair blue in the breeze behind her. She looked up from the sand, where her gaze had been previously, and almost stopped in her tracks. A creature was ahead, sitting on a cluster of small, smooth boulders. Its skin was a handsome caramel, with light scars crossing the body. The creature had slightly pointed ears, with light green fins encasing them. It had dark chocolate hair, which was tangled, and gently brushed the creature’s shoulders. Pale green scales covered the creature’s forearms, shoulders, and under its eyes. Iphnie slowly inched closer, hiding behind a large boulder. Fog drifted down from the low-laying clouds and shrouded the beach in grayish-silver. The creature lifted its head, now casting its previous task aside. Iphnie came closer, hidden by the misty fog. She realized that the creature was male… and he had been, not-so-gracefully, gutting some fish. The creature looked around, standing. Iphnie caught a look of his enchanting eyes: a mixture of green and turquoise, seeming to swirl and mix with every moment. He looked around, his eyes narrowing. He wore simple clothing—tattered fabric pants with seaweed woven in to cover holes. Suddenly the creature spoke, his voice dark (though Iphnie thought she could hear a slight waver in it). “Unless you are a creature of the sea and subject of Queen Cordelia, reveal yourself and surrender. If you are cooperative, I may let you go.” He raised his gutting knife, which Iphnie realized was a wicked-sharp scythe. Iphnie’s wings buzzed softly. The creature’s gaze locked in her direction. His gills at his neck—which Iphnie only just realized—flared slightly. Iphnie sighed, slowly stepping out from the dense fog.
