Hello! I was thinking about the story of Job a while ago, which made me realize how disturbing it actually is. The first time I heard about it, I was a rather immature 10 year old, so I did not properly understand it - in fact, I even took my religion teacher’s explanation for granted and perceived the story as “proof” of God’s love. However, as I reread it a while ago, I realized how truly horrific it was, and how it put God in a terrible light. It also raised a lot of questions: for example, if God is all-knowing, then he already knew that Job wouldn’t give up on his faith, making the “test” and suffering the man had to endure pointless. With this in mind, why did God actually accept Satan’s bet? Did he want to prove Satan wrong, which would be a perfect example of pride, did he enjoy seeing his followers in pain, or was it because he actually did not know what would happen? Either way, all of these options contradict what we’ve been taught about God: if the first two possibilities are true, then God is not loving and, dare I say, immoral, since he deliberately let Satan inflict pain on Job out of pride and the desire to win the bet (Job 1:9-12). If the last option turns out to be true, then this would make God not all-knowing, and therefore contradict his omniscient nature (which is shown in 1 John 3:20). I also dislike the ending, because it implies that the 10 killed children of Job did not actually matter, since they were “replaced” (Job 42:13). But wasn’t every human life important to God? Then why was this not the case? Now of course, I am not an expert on this topic: I'm just a teenager with a fixation on the Bible. I'm also aware that my interpretation of the events may not be the best, since I am not a theologist, but that's how I view things. Hopefully, I did not come across as rude or disrespectful, I only wanted to express my points. If there were any misunderstandings, I apologize, as this was not my intention. However, I would highly appreciate some clarifications and answers to my questions! Thank you for your time and patience, have a nice day!
- Me for writing this - The Bible for the book of Job !!! Thank you for the replies, I will respond as soon as I can. Right now, school is rough and I have a lot of tests and contests coming, so I won't be able to take my time answering. To avoid superficial replies, I think it's best to wait until I have a lot of time on my hands. Thank you for understanding !!!
