From a young age, she could feel the weight of her difference—the wings sprouting from her back, soft feathers glimmering in the sunlight—made her stand apart from the rest of her pack. Despite this, she formed a deep bond with her childhood friend, a spirited young wolf named Kael. Kael was everything Lyra wasn’t: grounded, fierce, and full of laughter. He would chase her through the forest, encouraging her to fly just a little higher each day, even when she struggled to master her wings. Their friendship was pure and true, and at night they would lie together on grassy hills, staring at the stars, eyes filled with wonder. It was on one of these nights that they made their fateful promise. "Hey, Kael?" Lyra asked in a quiet voice. "Yeah?" Kael responded. "Let's make a promise. No matter what happens, we'll always be best friends." Lyra said, hoping with all her might Kael would agree. A moment of silence passed, and anxiousness began to creep it's way into Lyra's thoughts. "Um, of COURSE, you dummy!" Kael finally responded with infectious laughter. "I thought you already knew that!" Lyra felt the anxiousness lift away from her, spiraling into the night sky. "Yeah, just...a promise feels more REAL, I guess." She said. "Okay, okay. I promise." Kael said. And with that, they drifted to sleep among the wind-filled grass and star-filled sky. But you know what the old stories always warn. Nothing good lasts forever. A mere month after that serene night on the hill, tragedy struck. Kael went on a hunting trip with his dad. Lyra waited at the town gate, bouncing excitedly. It had been a week, and she had been bullied for her wings furiously while Kael was absent. She saw his dad's silhouette slide out of the forest, and a gleam of mischief and playfulness filled Lyra's eyes as she expected to see her friend tagging along. But instead, she saw only the scared, lonely, face of his dad. She took a step back - what was wrong? Where was Kael? Suddenly the dad's eyes bored into hers, and she felt like she wanted to wilt into the ground. As their gazes locked onto one another, she saw so many emotions - all of them horrible, unfamiliar, and uncomfortable. "W-where is Kael?" She managed to squeak out. "He..." the dad shuddered. "He didn't...he fell...I couldn't..." Suddenly the old wolf broke down sobbing. "He's gone. I couldn't save him, and...he's gone." Lyra gasped. No...It couldn't be true...her only friend. Gone. Forever. She broke down crying as well, until the two were simply a clump of dark fur at the gate, wailing in anguish. Kael felt the most pain he'd ever felt in his life. But this pain wasn't physical - no, this pain was much deeper. It crept inside, then grabbed his heart and squeezed until it popped open, letting all his sadness gush out in a flood. He looked down on his dad and friend, crying uncontrollably at the gate. It wasn't their faults. It was okay...even though he was dead, he wasn't truly away from them. Kael just wished they could see that. They were in so much emotional pain as well, but when he spoke, they wouldn't hear. When he touched them, they wouldn't feel. He was...helpless. But he could do one thing. He could keep their promise. And then, in that moment, he resolved: he would watch over Lyra. He would try to protect her, though he didn't quite know how, and most of all: He wouldn't leave her. Because like Lyra said...a promise feels real. And it feels real because it is real. This is what Kael told himself as he watched her grieve. This is what Kael told himself for years...and years, and years, and years. Because Kael has never broken that promise. Still, to this day, he watches over Lyra. And year after year, he wonders...does she know? All he can do is hope that she is happy. Lyra has found other friends. Wolves who accept her for her wings, even are jealous of them. But she's never forgotten Kael, the first kind soul in her life. And sometimes, she swears she can still hear him in the back of her mind. Hears his laugh in the ways the grass rustles, the way the trees sway. All she can do is hope that he is happy. All they can do is hope. ─ ⊹ ⊱꒰☆꒱⊰ ⊹ ─ End Whoo! That took a LONG time to write! Hope you enjoyed my entry! I might make some more...i don't know yet.
