How to grow salt crystals. (Instructional comic included). First, take your popsicle stick and string. wrap the string around the body of the popsicle stick twice then tie it off. Cut it so one end is about 5 inches and the other end is 1 inch or shorter. Take your mixing cup. CAREFULLY pour in 1/4 cup hot water. Take the salt and pour in about 1 1/2 tbsp. (If you have gel food dye, now would be the time to add it in. A dab for pastel, a dot for medium, and a drop for dark. A little goes a long way). Pour the salt mixture into the paper cup. Set the popsicle stick across the top of the cup. If the string is floating on the top, use your finger or the end of a pen to push it under. Set the cup in a warm area. Wait about 3-5 days (this may sound easy but it's not) for the water to evaporate and you should have some salt crystals! The science behind it (quickly): The hot water dissolves the salt because of its polar nature. Positive attracts negative, negative attracts positive. The positive ends of the water molecules attract the negatively charged chlorine ions in salt. The negative ends of the water molecules attract the positively charged sodium ions, pulling the salt apart. Salt is sodium chloride. Once the string absorbs the hot water and salt mixture, the hot water starts to evaporate as steam leaving behind the sodium and chlorine with then start to form bonds because negative attracts positive and positive attracts negative again creating the 'growing' effect as salt crystals form from the solution. SCIENCE!!! Have fun!
