———————— —prologue———————————— March 1st. 2002. The smell of banana bread filled the fake grassed backyard. My sister and I were playing tug-of-war with a rainbow roped rope. From the outside of the pale yellow one-storied house, I could hear Amanda singing with her angelic voice. My sister, whom I called Truffle, dropped the rope and ran into the open back door. I then heard a man scream. Ian. Amanda’s fiancé. Truffle returned outside in the arms of Ian, who was in a fancy tuxedo. He thrust Truffle on the grass. Truffle whined and ran to the far corner of the fence. Ian wiped his tux and walked inside the house. I flopped down on the fake grass, exhausted from playing tug-of-war with Truffle and watching Ian and Amanda. “Puppies! Dinner, puppies!!” Amanda shouted from the window. I shot up, gazing at the food on the windowsill. I sprinted into the house and into the kitchen to get first licks on the chow. Then I heard a pan crash on the ground and Amanda’s scream.
