part 2: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1140945886/ part 3: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1142187905/ EYYYY A SONIC AU!!! so to clear up a few things before we get into this: 1) yes i know the ancients technically aren't gods in the sonic canon. but just. shhh. i do what i want. this is literally a story about talking animals, so suspend your disbelief lmbo. 2) i'm probably going to have to split this au into multiple parts because im a teensy weensy bit of a yapper. so this is part one! :) 3) this au is called starfall! i swear i didn't even think about the starfall islands from sonic frontiers but now i'm not changing it soooo 4) this turned into an actual writing about a third of the way through. whoops. ANYWAY scroll down to read!! ------------ The Ancients need a solution. And that solution…comes in the form of two seemingly-mortal hedgehogs. The Ancients, despite being gods, know that they’ll eventually die out. And they need something to rule in their stead. Once they’re gone, who knows where Mobius will end up? With no one to keep it in check, how will it continue to spin? One of the Ancients suggests that they handpick however many creatures they need and give them the power to keep Mobius in order. Another wonders if they can’t just make these creatures in the first place. And so Brisk (Sonic) and Terios (Shadow) are handcrafted by all the ancients and infused with the power of the Chaos Emeralds, godlings in their own right. The Ancients differ on what they want these godlings to truly be. They all agree on some things: all life should be given a chance, and the best should be assumed of everyone. It’s only if the existence of something or someone is irreparably damaging the world--if there’s no other possible outcome--that they should be annihilated. Peace and freedom are vital. Mobius and its people are something to be loved and cherished. Something to want to connect with. And Brisk and Terios desperately want to do that. But…they can’t. Not yet. “You aren’t ready, child,” one Ancient says with a little smile, reaching down and patting Brisk’s head. She ruffles the soft fur between his ears, then joins him in watching Mobius spin beneath them. “The Chaos Emeralds need time to adjust to you.” She doesn’t add that it’s been hard to coax the Emeralds into willingly adhering to the hedgehogs’ bodies. That maybe the Ancients miscalculated, and putting so much power in one being would overwhelm them, rather than benefit them. The Ancients can keep this in check with their own passive influence. But they won’t be here forever. Now, they need a solution for their solution. “But when will we be ready?” asks Terios, by Brisk’s side. The two are holding hands, tethered to each other as always. “Yeah,” Brisk agrees, looking over at the other hedgehog, then up at the Ancient. “I wanna go now.” “It’s beautiful down there,” Terios adds in a soft murmur. Brisk nods. Mobius is a swirling mix of blue and green and white, forever spinning. Through the Ancients’ projections, they’ve seen glimpses of huge forests, oceans, fields. Villages full of people, and bonfires full of dance and music and laughter. The two godlings long to experience that for themselves. To see the world they were created to protect with their own eyes. The Ancient feels her heart ache for them. This was what the others hadn’t anticipated: that their creations would think and feel for themselves. That they would have their own souls. They aren’t just vessels anymore. To this Ancient, they never were. They’re her children, and she doesn’t know how to explain to them that they need to continue waiting. They’ve waited for so long. Longer than a mortal lifetime, because time doesn’t run the same for the Ancients as it does for Mobians. And it’s with a mother’s grief that the Ancient tells them, “I know. But that time just hasn’t come yet.” The Ancient knows something else that she doesn’t tell Brisk and Terios: that she can feel herself fading, that she can feel all of the Ancients doing the same. She knew the time was coming when the Ancients would die; they all did. They’ve already ruled for thousands of years. Before, it was a small problem. Now, it’s more urgent. Brisk and Terios will have no one. And the Ancients need to ensure that their link with the Chaos Emeralds’ power is stable before that time comes. It happens all at once. A tide slowly rising, tension reaching the breaking point, until suddenly the Ancients are gone. Their forms blink out, their power absorbed into the Chaos Emeralds. It’s too early. Brisk and Terios still aren’t ready. Their connection with the Chaos Emeralds is shaky at best, and the Ancients aren’t there to stabilize them anymore. And so the two hedgehogs begin falling towards the surface of Mobius.
(cont. below) Brisk gasps, his stomach dropping as he feels himself lose altitude. He looks directly below him, and there’s Terios. They lock eyes, both terrified. What do they do? No matter what they try, they can’t stop their fall. The Emeralds don’t want to listen to them--their power sparks from their quills and fur. Brisk makes a split-second decision. If they’re going to fall to Mobius, then he wants Terios to live. “Give me your hand,” he shouts over the wind. Terios, confused, eyes wide, reaches out. Brisk grabs his hand and pulls him back until Terios is above, and Brisk is below. Brisk watches Terios’s expression change. No, he mouths, ears flattening. No, you can’t. “Enjoy it for me,” Brisk says aloud. Terios is fighting to switch their positions again, but Brisk won’t let him. He smiles. “Forever, remember?” An echo of what they would tell each other whenever they separated: I’ll always be here. You know where to find me. I’ll miss you. Terios is the first to lose conciousness. They’re in the lower atmosphere, only a few thousand feet from the ground when Brisk pulls Terios closer to shield him from the impact. This will hurt. A lot. But at least Terios has a chance. Brisk hits the ground first. For the briefest of moments, he feels only searing pain. He sees trees over his head and Terios in his arms, eyes closed, but still breathing. Then Brisk’s world goes black. And for nearly fifty years, he doesn’t wake up. ------------ aaaaaaand that's it for part one! out of all the sonic au's i have, this one is the newest and yet has the most clearly defined lore??? idk it's just been on my mind a lot. (looking pointedly at brisk and terios) i just think they're neat,,,, depends on my motivation when the next parts will come out! i HAD planned for this all to be a single project, POSSIBLY two, but then i started writing a lot for each character and that whole idea went out the window. someone tell me to stop writing so much lol. ask any questions if you're curious about something because i'd love to talk about these two idiots i'll link the other parts here when i get them out! :DD ------------ CREDITS!! art: me! music: his world (sonic 06) remix by Hi I'm Ray au: starfall special thanks to sonic the hedgehog for getting stuck in my brain so frequently that i went crazy and made au's just to get more content. im shaking you around like beads in a jar /affectionate
