Quil bounced on his tiny paws, his tail flicking eagerly as he peered out of the nursery. The rain blurred the clearing, turning the camp’s floor to soft mud. It looked fun to pounce in, and his little claws itched to explore. Turning to his denmates, he whispered, “I bet I can sneak past Amma without her noticing!” He puffed out his tiny chest, eyes gleaming with mischief. “I have to see if the puddles are deep enough to swim in!” Just then, a rustling noise came from outside—pawsteps. Trufflerose, the gentle but sharp-eyed queen, was returning. Quil’s fur bristled with excitement. “Quick! Do we hide or run for it?” One of the other kits, a small gray she-kit named Lapiskit, flattened her ears. “Are you mouse-brained?” She hissed in a whisper. “Mama will kill us if she catches us out there!” Beside her, a golden-brown Tom named hypokit huffed. “She won’t kill us. But she will sit on us, and I don’t want to be stuck in the nursery all day,” he grumbled. He glanced at Quil, then at the entrance, where the pawsteps were getting closer. Quil's tiny heart thudded with excitement. The rain-slicked camp outside looked like an endless playground, the puddles shimmering under the gray sky. He couldn't just sit here! With a flick of his tail, he crouched low. “Okay, new plan,” he whispered. “We don’t hide or run—we sneak.” Lapiskit let out a nervous squeak, but hypokit grinned. Just then, the brambles at the nursery entrance shifted, and Trufflerose’s familiar scent washed over them. “I know you’re up to something,” came faer amused but firm voice. Quil froze. He exchanged a glance with Hypo and Lapis. Fox-dung! She’s onto us! But he couldn’t give up now! Not when adventure was just a few tail-lengths away. What would they do? Try to talk their way out of it? Make a break for it? Or maybe… distract Truffle somehow? ๑‧˚₊꒷︶ଓ Hello, and welcome to my baby boys jrps!
