It is not very active and spends most of its time swallowing food in the sediment. They can often be seen with one or two of the heads in the air, as the heads are also used for swallowing water to pass through the gill for oxygen, as well as a sensory organ for detecting predators in the water. They have relatively high lifespans because of their inactivity. If threatened, the coeloderes will either retract the soft part into the exoskeleton, or wildly flap the soft parts up in an attempt to flee by swimming in a random direction. The coeloderes start their life as very small plankton, flowing with the current which carries them around, causing their large range.
