She knew that she had been vain in declaring her daughter’s superiority over the gods. Filled with regret, she surveyed the world below with an idle eye, when suddenly, her gaze caught on something. A bard, telling a story. Her story. With eloquent gestures and an inviting tone, he wove a colorful fabric with his words. Queen Cassiopeia, a beautiful queen with an even more beautiful daughter. Her mistake. Her daughter’s miraculous rescue. Cassiopeia watched this tale, certain the gods had drawn her attention to this to tear her apart. She longed to cry out in agony, but her fate in the stars forbade her from speaking. The bard pointed to the sky, straight at her. He told the crowd about where she hung in the heavens. Somewhere, he said, the former Queen of Ethiopia felt remorse greater than words. Cassiopeia was surprised at his words, but they changed something inside of her. Something in her was released. Her story, her earthy soul was forever strung among the stars. But suddenly, Queen Cassiopeia of Ethiopia’s spirit was finally released from her prison in the night, and drifted off to wherever spirits go. (3/5) Lilith Delahunt sat alone on a cliff high above the sea, looking out into the waves. The inky black swirled, warning her to stay away yet somehow welcoming her all the same. Beautiful, primal bird calls echoed all around her like crystals in the wind. Death had been calling her name for years now. He had taken all she loved. Her family. Her home. Her country. Yet here in this foreign land she had found a solace. A friend. A sister not in blood but in spirit. They were one. And now Death had found her too. The dark water was a painful reminder of the plague that had taken everything away. The pain inside her wrenched at her heart and despite all her qualms, a sound slipped out of her lips, ringing around her far too loud. Agony wrapped in every syllable, telling of all she had lost. She’d never again hear the joyful laugh of her and her soul sister combined, rising and falling like the bird song that mocked her even now. She heard steps and stood, her back to the edge of the deadly drop. She locked eyes with the village doctor, who she was certain was trying to assure her that she had been missed, everyone was looking for her. Lilith’s hatred rose up against this man that had not been able to save the parts of her life that were forever gone. He couldn’t save her. With no hesitation and her stare never wavering, she fell back into the sea, into oblivion, into Death’s waiting arms. (3/2)
