Martin glanced at Jon, who sat beside him, worrying at the hem of his shirt. "The Unknowing's- it's today, right? How much time do you have before you leave?" "Ten minutes." Jon answered immediately. "We have exactly ten minutes." Martin wasn't sure what to do. Sure, there was the plan to get Elias out, and there was the plan for how to stop the Unknowing, but Martin knew there was a chance that more than one of the people wouldn't make it out. He desperately hoped one of them won't be Jon, selfish as it was. "Good luck," He said instead, as he watched the clock. The hands are moving, every tick bringing the Unknowing a little closer. "Thanks." They sat beside each other like that for another two minutes, by Martin's count. Then Jon got to his feet stiffly. "I should get ready." He said, avoiding Martin's eye. "Bye Martin." He started to walk to the door. "Wait." Martin placed one hand on Jon's shoulder, and he jerked in surprise. "What?" He asked, turning back to face Martin. Martin took a deep breath, and kssed him. It was brief, and Martin made sure of that, but he knew it had gotten his message across. "Just in case something goes wrong." He said, drawing away. Jon looked mildly shocked, and a little flustered, but as far as Martin could tell, not mad. "On either of our ends." "I- I don't know-" Jon stammered. "Just- come back safe, alright?" Martin managed, and then he left.
