For those people here is a short explanation: We can use digits 0-9 to represent our numbers, but in binary we can only use 0 or 1. Because there are only 2 digits, each column is worth twice the previous. The number 1100 means that there is one 8, one 4 and no 2s or 1s, so 8+4=12. It's that simple.
