A couple nights later I crouched down low behind the crumbling adobe wall. Near my so called house that's not really my house anymore. My heart was pounding. The sent of burning thatch filled the air again. Oh no they were coming again! The screams and shouting cut through the night like knives. The Comanche had come quicker then I excepted. Their horses like shadows in the moonlight. The war cries sending fear rippling through the town of San Miguel my town! I covered my mouth to keep myself from screaming or crying out. If I was found there would be no mercy no mercy at all. My father had spoken of the raids so many times I knew a lot about them. The warriors who swept down from the north with painted faces and braided hair, who stole cattle, burned homes and took captives. I knew all of it! I was going to stop it! The flickering of fire lights came closer and closer to me. They danced across the dust of shadows. I then peeked over the wall, my breath catching in my throat. A warrior WAS SO CLOSE TO ME! I had to move the wall would not keep me hidden for as long as I hoped. Swallowing my fear, I waited for a moment and then as the warrior turned, his attention drawn to a desperate scream plaza. I bolted from the wall. Dirt bit at my bare feet as I ran faster and faster. I ran past fallen bodies, screams for help and broken homes. I ran until I reached the riverbed, where reeds swayed in the wind. I threw myself into the undergrowth pressing my body flat against the damp Earth. Then I heard hoofbeats approaching, the snorting breath of a horse just beyond the reeds. The warrior stopped and I held my breath. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating. Then the horse moved on its rider satisfied that no one was there. I exhaled shakily. I was alive still. For now anyway..... Fact: The northern states of Mexico and the soldiers they could muster were left to deal with the raids, as the national government was struggling with fiscal issues, civil war, and foreign intervention.
