I compiled some information about alterhumans because a lot of people do not know very much about them and there are a large amount of alterhumans on the hive. I am not going into systems, as not all systems consider themselves alterhuman, and I myself am not a system, but I will have some resources about systems linked. Please do not start syscourse I'll cry. ----- ----- Common alterhuman terms and their definitions in alphabetical order: Alterhuman: "Alterhumans are individuals who have identities beyond what is traditionally considered human. An alterhuman can identify as non-human, or they can identify as being human in ways alternate to what is societally common. The word "alterhuman" can be used as an umbrella term for otherkin, therians, fictionkin, plurals and systems, copinglinkers, otherhearted individuals, those with synpaths, and any other similar identity." (https://otherkin.wiki/) Copinglink: "A copinglink or otherlink is a voluntarily, intentionally adopted nonhuman or alterfictional identity. The identity may be adopted by anyone, and for a number of reasons, of which coping with adversity is only one." (https://otherkin.wiki/) Factkin: "Factkin (sometimes called factualkin or diaunthros) are individuals who identify as real people, such as celebrities or historical figures. Factkinity is controversial in otherkin and alterhuman communities, with some believing that factkin are trolls, have ill intent, or have otherwise invalid identities. However, many factkin reject this, asserting that there are individuals who engage with the label in good faith." (https://otherkin.wiki/) Karkat adding on, if you are a factkin, that is okay. It is not necessarily voluntary or with malicious intent. However, especially if it is someone you know, please be careful with how you express this. It can be hurtful to others around you. Fictionfolk: "An umbrella label for all those with fictional-related identities. Includes both 'as' and 'with' identities." (https://dragonsroost.neo(delete)cities.org/) Fictionkin: "Fictionkind, or Fictionkin, refers to someone who identifies as character, species, or anything else originating from fiction. There are a plethora of reasons why someone may be fictionkin, such as spiritualistic reasons, psychological reasons, reincarnation, and more." (https://alterhuman.miraheze.org/) Karkat adding onto this, this is often involuntary, as most otherkins are. Kintype: "The object of an otherkin's identification." (https://otherkin.wiki/) Otherhearted: "Otherhearted describes a person who has a strong fundamental connection to a species or character which impacts their core sense of self. This is most commonly described in terms of identifying with a being as opposed to identifying as one." (https://otherkin.wiki/) Otherkin: "Otherkin are a subculture of people who identify as nonhuman. People may feel they are otherkin because of reincarnation, neurodivergence, archetypal resonance, or a number of other reasons. Most commonly, being otherkin is involuntary." (https://otherkin.wiki/) Otherpaw: Otherpaws are individuals who partake in roleplay, quadrobics, wearing/making gear, etc. as a hobby/interest without necessarily being alterhuman. Polykin/polytherian: A term used to describe someone with more than one kintype/theriotype. Shifts: "Shifting is the experience of nonphysically 'becoming' more like one's kintype, theriotype, or other identity. It is also possible for other types of alterhuman, such as otherhearted people, to experience shifts." (otherkin.fandom.com) You can likely find a better source for this. Synpath: "A synpath is something that someone identifies with but not as. The idea is similar to the concept of a hearttype; the coiner was not aware that the word otherhearted existed to describe a similar concept when they coined it. While many people have attempted to precisely define the difference between synpaths and hearttypes, in practice they are used as synonyms." (https://otherkin.wiki/) Therian: "Therianthropes, also known as therians, are individuals who identify either as an animal species that exists or has existed on Earth, or as a nonhuman species which experiences particularly animalistic instincts or urges. People may explain their therianthropy through reincarnation, neurodivergence, or any other number of reasons. The object of a therianthrope's identity is called their theriotype. Most commonly, therianthropy is involuntary." (https://otherkin.wiki/) ----- ----- Fictionkin centric terms: Double: Someone with the same kintype as another. Some people are uncomfortable with this and wish not to interact with doubles, some like interacting with doubles and some are somewhere in between. Source: The media or other kind of fictional world a kintype originates from. (continued in notes and credits)
(continued from instructions) Sourcemate: Someone who shares a source with another person. As with doubles, comfortability when interacting with sourcemates varies from person to person. These terms may be used by other alterhumans, but are primarily used by fictionkins and fictives. ----- ----- FAQ: Q: What is an alterhuman? A: If you actually read anything above you would know that, bud. Q: Are therians furries? A: Not necessarily, though they can be. Furries are a fandom and an interest in anthropomorphic animals, while therians are individuals who identify as (typically) an animal. Q: Why would someone identify this way? A: It may be involuntary, or it may be for fun or to cope or any other kind of reason. Q: What do I have to do if I am alterhuman? A: Absolutely nothing! You can express your identity however you want, and that includes not expressing it at all. You do not have to use certain names, pronouns, identify with certain genders or sexualities, use gear, do quads, or anything else to be alterhuman. You can if you want, of course. Q: How do I know if I'm alterhuman? A: Do research and see if terms are right for you! You can always experiment with your identity, and if you feel like something is right, then you can totally use it. It's also okay if you find out you're wrong later! If you have any other questions ask me and I will do the best of my ability to answer you accurately. If you'd like, or if I get the same question several times, I will add it to FAQ to potentially help others. Alternatively, do your own research about alterhumans and come to your own conclusions. ----- ----- Websites with more information!
