what is DID? Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a mental health condition where a person has two or more distinct identities or personality states, also known as alters. These identities may have their own way of thinking, feeling, and behaving. The person may experience memory gaps beyond what would be explained by ordinary forgetfulness. This gets formed due to severe trauma before the ages of 10-11, making the part of the brain that develops personality to split in 2 or more, making alters. In the context of DID, a system refers to the collection of different identities or alters within a person with DID. These identities can vary in age, gender, mannerisms, and even memories. The system is the internal structure that encompasses all these distinct identities that co-exist within the individual with DID. A system can have as little as 2 to as many as 1000+ alters. This does not define someone's trauma or make it worse then others, everyone's trauma is valid and not good to the mind and self. D.I.D. diagnosis can take months to years to get, so a lot of systems are self diagnosed. It also costs money and takes resources to get a full diagnosis. It can make getting a job hard. Many individuals go without professional diagnosis in order to live an otherwise normal life. Just because someone is self diagnosed does not mean they are faking. They have likely done a ton of research to get to their diagnosis conclusion.
