This would be the introduction of the 8900 Class. The first member, 8900, was built in December 1927, and was the first steam locomotive on the Hipperkee Pacific's roster to receive a Coast to Coast tender and a streamlined pilot. The class was unique for having a set of three cylinders. In 1976, 8900 was recruited to pull the American Freedom Train alongside Southern Pacific 4449, Reading 2101, and Texas and Pacific 610. While 4449 pulled the consist in the western portion of the United States, Reading 2101 across the eastern portion, and Texas and Pacific 610 across Texas, 8900 pulled the consist across the New England region. That was when 8900 was fitted with the American flags, and brass eagle that it still has to this day. No. 8900 was also the sole steam locomotive to not be painted in an AFT related paint scheme, instead being decked out with its American flags, brass eagle, and "1776-1976" being applied to the sides of its cab above its number, the AFT logo on its headlight's side numberboards, renumbered to No. 200 on its front headlight numberboard, and "American Freedom Train" being applied to its tender. As of 2025, all 15 members are still in active service with the Hipperkee Pacific. No. 8907 was fitted with a Coffin feedwater heater instead of a Westinghouse feed water heater. In 1978, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of LNER A4 No. 4468 "Mallard's" speed record, No. 8900 would wear an LNER A4 3 chime for the entirety of July of 1978 before getting its original, and current, 6 chime back in August that same year.
