Hawkstar lay in his nest, his breath shallow and uneven. The air in his den felt heavier tonight, the scents of moss and earth wrapping around him like a final embrace. His limbs ached, not with pain, but with the deep weariness of a life well-lived. He blinked slowly, his vision blurring as he gazed at the entrance of his den, where the faint glow of moonlight filtered through. He had seen so many moons rise and fall, had led his Clan through seasons of hardship and prosperity. Now, the time had come to leave them behind. A deep sigh escaped him, barely more than a whisper. 'I hope they’ll be alright without me.' His thoughts lingered on his daughter, the deputy. 'She’s strong, wise beyond her moons. She’ll lead with a steady paw. But will she be ready?' He had always tried to prepare her, to guide her, but a part of him feared she might not truly be ready for the weight of leadership. 'You’ve grown so much, Falconfeather. Becoming a leader in your own right. I hope you’ll lead with the same wisdom and strength that you’ve shown me over the moons.' His heart swelled with pride as he thought of the countless moons they had shared, the moments where he had watched her transform into the warrior she was today. 'You’ll be ready, I know it. But I can’t help but worry—no. I know you'll be a great Leader... No matter what.' He couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of pride for each of his kits. Falconfeather, Gladiolashade, Pumpkinfrost, Ospreyclaw, Tourmalineheart and Carnelianbloom. His kits had grown into strong, capable cats in their own ways. But as the weight of time pressed on him, he found it hard not to wish he had more time to watch them lead their lives. He sighed, 'I’ll miss you, my kits.' But it was Bloomheart who filled his heart most tonight. Her memory lingered like the scent of the flowers she had once loved. 'I never wanted to lose you,' he thought, a pang of grief catching in his chest. 'I thought we would grow old together. But I was left with only memories...' Her loss had carved a deep wound in him, one that never fully healed, but it had taught him strength. Her love had shaped him into the leader he was. 'I'll be with you soon...' A soft rustle outside the den broke his thoughts. His ears twitched. Someone was coming. He could feel the presence of another—he wasn’t alone, not yet.
