Quill and Ryder continued their walk, still hand in hand. “I thought you liked Jake,” Quill said. “I thought I did too,” said Ryder, gazing up at the slowly setting sun, “but that’s not what I was feeling.” “How do you know though?” “How do I know what?” “That what you were feeling for Jake /wasn’t/ a crush and that what you’re feeling for me /is/ a crush.” Ryder stopped walking and spun Quill around to face her. “I know because every time I looked at Jake he made me feel angry. Angry at the way he acted, angry at the way he talked to people. But when I look at you, you make my heart melt, you take my breath away, you make the world stop for a moment.” “Really?” “Yes, really.” Quill looked down at the ground and smiled. “What are you so happy about?” Ryder asked. “That you’re not mad at.” Ryder looked surprised, “Why would I be mad at you?” “Because liking each other could ruin or friendship.” “How so?” “What if we break up? What happens then?” Ryder stepped up to Quill, closing the space between the two of them, “If we were to break up that means we were together,” she whispered, a sly smile on her face. “I didn’t… I mean… I…” Quill’s face when bright red. “Come on.” “Will you be my girlfriend?” “Of course,” Ryder said, nothing more than a breathy whisper that floated off into the air.
