SHAPESHIFT Chapter Ten: Raven climbed into one of the hammocks. Onyx climbed into the other. Onyx fell asleep immediately. Raven was tired, but she had the strange sensation that someone — or something — was watching her. Raven closed her eyes. That made it worse. She opened them again. Meanwhile, the city of Clearport was in absolute chaos. Professor Skyamber wove through the thick crowd gathered in the town square. “Excuse me!” He called as he moved swiftly to the front of the crowd. The square carried an overall mood of confusion. The alarms had gone off; something that hadn’t happened since 1874, the day after Raven Navigator had vanished into the night. “Citizens of Clearport, it has come to my attention that yesterday evening, Onyx Winterfield vanished from her cabin.” The mayor, Abalone Stormset, spoke from a podium positioned at the front of the crowd. “The cabin has been searched many, many times since then. The only evidence that has been found is a silver locket.” The citizens of Clearport started murmuring. “But that hasn’t happened since—” “Raven Navigator…” “— not possible!” “— and right after she —” A smile slowly crept over Professor Skyamber’s face. Everything was going according to plan.
