“That’s us,” Madeline realized, “Alicia accidentally flew into a tree, and Hannah’s hand lit on fire. Wait, but didn’t you say the ruby was stolen fifty years ago? So how would it have been able to choose us?” “Because the ruby chose families, not specific people,” Alicia’s mom explained. She gestured to the adults. “All of our families were told we would someday have the elemental power. But it can only be given to people under eighteen years old, so when we had kids, you got the power instead.” “But why us?” Penny asked. “I mean, why not Lexi and Jessica? Or Tommy or Sylvia?” she said, referring to the twins’ and Hannah’s siblings. “Because you found the Silver Paper first.” Hannah’s dad replied, pointing to the foil that Alicia was still holding. “‘To the first four Elementals who see this,’” Alicia read. “It all makes sense now.” “Not to me,” Hannah argued, “Twenty-four hours ago, we were all just living our lives, and now magic is real, we now have that magic, and life is changed forever.” “Yeah, pretty much,” Hannah’s dad agreed, “In fact, you’re going to have to train in your new powers, so that will take the place of school.” “Yay, no more useless schoolwork!” Penny said, “But on the other hand, weird things are happening, we have weird abilities, and who’s going to teach us how to use them anyway?” “The current Elemental.” the twins’ mom answered. “Probably that girl we saw in the forest.” Madeline whispered to her, “She said to go back there tomorrow, same place, same time, so that might be for training.” “Can’t wait!” Alicia said suddenly, “When I learn how to control flying, that’ll be really fun!”
