Madeline waved her arms to get their attention and pointed at the picture. Somehow, the buttons had opened a secret tunnel in the wall that led underground. Mr. Hill went in, and the earth tracker followed him. Camille’s eyes widened. Clearly, she didn’t know that it was there. Mr. Hill kept walking along the tunnel for a while until he came to an underground chamber. There was another man there, but the shadows hid his face. “What news?” the second man said quietly. “She found the papers, although I don’t think she read them very closely yet. You’ll have to hide the ruby somewhere else once she does.” “What!” Camille exclaimed. Mr. Hill looked up. “Did you hear something?” “No. You probably imagined it.” the second man said. “Anyway, you know the ruby is perfectly safe where it is. Even if she learns the location, she’ll never be able to get to it. We’re done here. Learn what you can and tell me tomorrow.” Mr. Hill nodded and started back up the tunnel. Camille floated the dirt back into the bag she was still holding. “Come to my office now,” she whispered, then she ran back the way they came. The girls took off after her as well. Hannah only half understood what the secret conversation was about, but she knew enough. Mr. Hill was a spy.
