Myth: The autism spectrum is linear, ranging from "high-functioning" to "low-functioning" autism. There is no such thing as "high-functioning" or "low-functioning" autism. This terminology can actually be harmful as "low-functioning" says that a person cannot think for themself, and "high-functioning" says that a person doesn't need accommodations for their needs. The autism spectrum is not linear. The autism spectrum is like a wheel composed of different autistic traits. You cannot be more or less autistic. There is no such thing as "mild" or "severe" autism. You are autistic, or you are not.
