The Pain Train is not a very good weapon. In certain game modes, like CTF (Capture The Flag), it's just a downgrade since it makes you take more damage. Its purpose is making you capture points and push carts as fast as a Scout does, and while it has its uses, it's still not a good weapon. However. A friend of mine had been repeatedly telling me to play Pain Train Demoknight (Demoknight but using the Pain Train), for the funny, and I did. And it kind of works. I used it on CTF, so it was just a downgrade for me, but it's not an utterly awful concept. Lemme break it down. The common Demoknight melee weapons, the sword-types, don't have random critical hits, meaning you'll need to use skill. Since the Pain Train doesn't have that drawback, it's can hit random critical hits. It has the same damage as stock, same swing speed, and basically the same everything as stock, so the only downside is more damage from bullets. Which are... well, shotguns, pistols, miniguns, Crusader's Crossbow bolts, Huntsman arrows, Sniper bullets, and scattergun shots. I managed to get a positive K/D in the game I played (22/20), mostly because of how easy it was to charge into someone, hit them, and get a guaranteed critical hit, and the occasional off-chance random crit. Since the Demoknight is mostly based around charging and slicing, getting all the guaranteed crits you can, if you mess up the timing, there's every chance in the world the game could bless you with a random critical hit and let you get away with the kill anyway. But is it valid? Should you, a real Mann Co. mercenary, play Pain Train Demoknight? Honestly, there"s no real reason not to. Sure, you take more damage from bullets, but that doesn't include rockets, pills, sticky bombs, and other melee weapons (and fire). If you just take advantage of your charging and use it to either close distances or remove burning, there's no real reason not to use the Pain Train for the power play. Pain Train Demoknight: Valid! (Pain Train is still a bad weapon though.) It's less ideal than practically any other weapon, but it's random crits save it.
