Once I get inside the arch, I steer right and gently set my bag down on the bench, unzipping the large pocket. Inside, my soft black and white cat mask glared up at me, daring me to put it on. Next to it, my fluffy faux fur black and white tail sat, I swallowed down my nerves and took a deep breath, I'm going to do this. My hands were shaking as I reached inside my bag and grabbed my mask and tail, pulling them out of my backpack. I then set them down on the bench and grabbed my paw gloves, slipping them over my hands. Once I was fully geared up, I zipped my backpack up again and walked to the cafeteria, as I walked, I passed by a group of 5 girls I'm not familiar with. "What the-" "um," One said, trying to get my attention, "excuse me? girl?" I turned my head; big mistake. I may have awakened 5 years ago, but this is my first time going public gearing. And I already regret my decision. "are you a furry?" I sighed, "Nope." I said, "I'm a therian, freshmen." I said the last word in a scoff, I'd seen these 3 once before going into my old freshman English class. I turned to keep walking and the girls erupted in laughter, "Furry!" One of the girls called after me. I wondered what was so funny, but pushed the question aside as I entered the cafeteria. 4 of the tables were full of friend groups and once I entered, the room went dead silent, some of them snickered, some just straight up laughed, while others stared at me in disbelief, I fiddled with my hands nervously as I walked through the empty line into the lunch room. I felt eyes follow me as I walk and whispers filled the room, "What is it wearing-" "is that a furry?" "I wonder if her parents still love her..." I ignored all the whispers and entered the lunch room to get some breakfast, I grabbed a milk carton, and a cup of cereal and ignored the stares from the lunch ladies, exiting the lunch room, entering the cafeteria again, taking a seat at a random table, far away from everybody else. I then pulled out my earbuds and pressed play to my music to block out the whispers from everyone else. Once I finished my food, I pulled out my computer and began my Math homework I should have done last night. I sat like that for 20 minutes before someone walked up to me, except not really. I group of sophomores, began sitting down mid-conversation as though I'm not there, invading my space. "Can you guys leave?" I asked timidly, "I was sitting here." They all looked at me and a girl with long blonde curls and soft blue eyes raised a brow, "Well if you think you're an animal, you can sit on the floor." Her voice was like venom, she turned back to continue her conversation with her friends but I would not take that level of disrespect, I stood up, "I don't think I'm an animal." I snapped. "I was sitting here first. Please-" "Bark! Bark!" the girls chanted, "On the floor dog!" My face flushed under my mask, suddenly, I was off balance, I screamed when one of the girls pushed me to the ground. "Hey!" I pushed myself up as the girls In front of me froze, a security guard stood behind me. My first 4 periods weren't very eventful, I got the occasional barks or laughs and for all my periods, we watched half of a movie silently. right now, I'm watching the goofie movie in English period 4. I only have 5 more minutes until lunch. All of my senses are engulfed with hunger and frustration. "Ding! Ding! Ding!" finally! Lunch. The entire class thunders out and I keep in the back as to keep my gear in good shape. I speed walk across the campus and over to the lunch line. Eyes fixed ahead of me, ignoring all of the stares and laughs. I exit the line with a hamburger and a juice, immediately looking for a place to sit, I walk up to my normal spot with Kayla, When she spots me, her features flush with both anger and embarrassment. I set down my food across from her and she stops me with her hand, looking around nervously, "I don't want to be seen with you like that." She hissed, I pulled back, "What do you mean?" "I mean, if you want to sit here, take that stuff off! If you won't take that off, leave." Her words stabbed me like a knife, "But..." My voice trailed off, "I'm your friend, why do you care?" "Either leave, or take that furry s*** off." My hurt quickly turned into anger, "Fine." I picked up my food, "I see how it is." And stalked off, exiting the cafeteria into the quad, but every seat is taken. Every bench, and ledge is taken by a laughing group of friends, I walked on, looking around, my anger is making a dragon mental shift threaten to come, I pushed it down, those are anything but fun. "Can you leave me alone?" I heard a girl's voice snap from somewhere behind me, I quickly spun around, my mental shift slowly taking over. A girl with long dark hair with a small fluffy black tail stood, as 2 girls and a boy stood over her, one of the girls swung her arm and snatched the girl's tail in her fist, pulling it hard where it snapped in half. I quickly let the dragon take
(cont.) over and charged, standing between the girl and the bullies. I snatched the tail from one of the girl's hands and my eyes turned into lethal slits. "Leave her alone." I hissed and handed the girl her half of her tail to free my hands. "Ooooohhh!" The group laughed, "so threatening!" They said sarcastically, I smirked, "You should be scared, you're dealing with a dragonkin in the middle of a shift." I took a step forward, "And I've been in fights with larger groups and won." Their eyes went wide, "You're lying." The boy said, "Maybe I am, maybe I'm not." I took 2 more steps towards them, "But do you really wanna find out? Because I know part of you has doubt, I know part of you actually believes that I have so do you really wanna take that risk?" They take slow steps back, "you're crazy!" And at that, they fled. I turned around to face the girl, relaxing my features. "You OK?" She just stared at me in aw, "You're an otherkin?" "And a therian. I see you probably are too." She nodded, "Did you tell them the truth? About the fights?" I laughed, "No." I said, "All bluff. Was I believable?" She laughed, a long hard, laugh, causing her to relax, "I'm Emma." She said, "Blossom." I smiled, then held out my hand, "I have some glue that'd fix your tail."
