Run!” Frisky’s parents sprinted out of the den, panic in their gaze. Leaf ran at the humans, who yelped in surprise. He tried to knock them over, at which he succeeded. The humans scrambled to their paws and grabbed at the nearest things. Which were Frisky, Wag, and Nip. “Pups! No!” Acorn cried. She sank to the ground, defeated. When she looked up, love, pain, and fear were all mashed up in her golden eyes. The humans opened up the cases they had brought with them. They studied the coyote cubs that they had in their hold while trying somewhat unsuccessfully to hold off the parents. “This one seems to be around five months old. And the other one looks like three months.” The second one gestured to Frisky, then Nip. “This one seems to have a very mild case of rabies. See, she’s sort of foaming at the mouth. It could still spread, though. We should end it now.” The first said, pointing at Wag. The second one argued with the first. “But, it would be cruel to take her away from her parents and siblings. We’re an animal rescue center.” “But it would be even more cruel to let her perish with pain, and her family seeing how she’ll suffer. Better to end it as soon and as painless as possible.” The first one shot back. “Even you know that, Alicia.” The human, Alicia, said “Brady, you know what? Fine, but I’m not doing it.” Brady pulled something sharp and long out of his case. It seemed to be a shiny, hard, silver tendril with a tube full of some sort of water in it. Wag understood everything, and looked like she might be sick. “Mom! Dad! Help me!” Leaf and Acorn knew what was coming and they ran at the humans. Alicia held them back, while Brady held it close to Wag’s neck, but before he could, Wag squiggled with all her strength. Brady yelped, and Wag came free. She pelted for the forest. Wag’s last words were, “I’ll find you! Don’t come looking for me!” Nip screamed Wag’s name. Frisky thought she did, too. She felt like she was in a dream. Maybe I’ll wake up and this will just be a nightmare. I’ll wake up next to Wag and Nip, and Wag won’t be gone. It can’t be. It just can’t. But no matter how much Frisky wished, she didn’t wake up, and Wag didn’t come back. Brady and Alicia picked Frisky and Nip up and carried them away. Frisky and Nip started screaming and their parents followed them, but Alicia and Brady were ready for them and pulled out a piece of rabbit, which the wild family loved eating. Their parent’s coyote instincts tried to take over and told them to stop and eat it. They needed to eat now that prey was scarce. But their need to get to their children had overridden it. They kept on moving, but the short break because of the rabbit that had been dangled in front of them had given the humans precious seconds that made Brady and Alicia faster. They were pulling away and Frisky took one last desperate look at her parents. Alicia held their cases and Brady held Nip and Frisky. Frisky wondered with panic and fear where on Earth the humans could be taking them? What if they kill us!? They reached the border of Frisky’s family’s territory. But the humans didn’t stop there. They kept going, into their neighbor’s land. Nip whimpered. “Frisky, I’m scared.” “I know, but what can we do?” To this, Frisky’s brother did not have an answer. They couldn’t do anything, so they succumbed to the hands holding them up. Soon, they came to a skinless, colorful, shiny beast. It was huge and bright red and it had strange black, thin suns for feet. It smelled acrid, and some other thing Frisky had never smelled before. Alicia moved towards the beast with the cases without any sort of fear or caution whatsoever. She pulled a big chunk of the beast’s flesh away and went inside. She went right into the beast’s belly? How? Brady followed, but not before he gently placed Nip and Frisky in separate cages with solid, silver tendrils overlapped together. Frisky thought she could hear Nip screaming her name as the assaulting human left him in the box, and locked him in. Frisky didn’t fight as Brady did the same to her. She knew it was no use. The beast roared to life making growling noises as Alicia pressed the red beast’s inside. The beast started to move away from the forest that Frisky was so fond of. Unbeknownst to the poor coyote cubs, they were being relocated to Colorado.
