The Franks ruled most of what is now France. In Spain, the Visigoths were in control and had switched to the main form of Christianity to unite their people. Italy was split between the Lombards in the north and the Byzantines in the south. The Pope had religious power. In Britain, Anglo-Saxons ruled small kingdoms. Christianity was starting to return through missionaries. In the east, Slavic tribes were moving in, and the Byzantines were also fighting the Persians. Northern and Eastern Europe still had many non-Christian tribes and no large kingdoms. The Christian Church was becoming strong and helped keep order in the West.
