But even the way I held my sw0rd was inherited by him, and my grip loosened. I hated how I started at the instinct to ruin, to destroy, to k!ll, how I’d become everything that he’d wanted me to be. Footsteps behind me made me turn, but, instead of Edward, Carlos held up his hands, and I lowered my sw0rd carefully. His eyes went over the m2tilated dummy. “Those took time to make, you know.” “Oh, shut up.” I closed my eyes for a long second. “It’s just…Edward.” “Isn’t it always?” His voice was light, plying, and the blue-green flecks in his eyes flashed in the light. In the resounding silence, Carlos took my hand, palm freezing against mine. He intertwined our fingers, and I couldn’t figure out why mine kept shaking. “He lied to me,” I said, and Carlos slowly started caressing my knuckles. But the touch was brief, and his hand stilled instantly. As I waited for him to speak, to confirm my injustice, his lips pursed, eyes narrowing considerably. I wanted to hear him say it, to hear that maybe we all had been deceived, manipulated—that our cause was a ruse. I wanted to scream in this empty room and have him be my echo. His eyes stared past me, blinking once, their light winking out. His hand slipped out of mine. “I think…you should be going.” He couldn't even look at me. His expression was absent of any telling signs. I would’ve swallowed the sw0rd of lies all over again even if it pierced me, even if it wasn’t true. Yet, as I pulled it out of myself, he didn’t even shy away at the bl00d on the bl4de. “Commend me to your master,” I said, not regretting the bite in my words as I turned on my heel. For once, I didn’t mind the ghosts trailing behind me as I walked by their gr4ves.
