I remember the first thing anyone said to me was, “Wow, you’re trans? That’s so cool!” I had found another rainbow, With many more yet to come. I had finally found a safe space, After years of being pushed around For no reason other than, Well, I was different. And I still am. I found my people, After years of unstable friendships. I found my passion, Through garden gnome armies and hungry squirrels. Nothing could compare to the feeling Of standing onstage, drumsticks in hand As the audience cheers for the new kids Not because we did well, But simply because we did it at all. But the moment ended, and the rainbow faded. I remember watching as the seniors turned their tassels in one final goodbye. I remember that last “see you next year” that one of our leaving friends couldn’t share. I remember the awkward moments, I remember the fun moments, But most importantly, I remember the colors and the music we made together.
