Staring, staring, just staring. The endless cliff loomed into the foggy depths, and Citrinespark was stuck there. How long had she been here? It could've been days, weeks, moons, hundreds of moons, or possibly more, time seemed repelled from this place. /Come back. Please./ It was all she wanted. For the figure that had been carelessly thrown down, one of the only family members she had left. Was it water or fire, ice or grass, stone or fur, what was down there? Finally, Tri began to go back to the known world... “We have to leave.” Kelpweed had been expressing the same sentiment for weeks now. But Citrinespark couldn’t bring herself to leave with her family, how could she? This was home. “This sickness.“ “We won’t catch it.” “SilverClan's council.“ “They’ll go away.” “We’re all /starving./“ “Sunstar will return soon, and everything will go back to normal.” The idea of leaving FlameClan horrified Citri more than any terror that was thrown her family’s way. FlameClan was home, it was safety, it was comfort. Nothing truly terrible could happen. But beyond that was unknown. How could she protect her family in an environment she knew nothing about? It was safer to stay here. Sunstar would return, and save them. He’d promised. And he was their leader, there was no reason to doubt him. So she, her mother and her kits stayed in FlameClan territory. Awaiting the day when things would return to normal. Citrinespark awoke to the sound of screaming ringing through her ears. It was bone-chilling. Flickerkit seemed to be equally as terrified, his tiny form huddled up against her flank. “She’s dead!” The screams explained themselves before the warrior could come to her paws, and her heart sunk. She scrambled up, to the sight of her mother sobbing over a scrawny, tiny body. Willowkit. Her granddaughter. Tri didn’t know how long she stood there. It was long enough for Sakura to stop crying. The way she stood there in silence, she reflected her husband’s dazed despair. Flickerkit was the same, nuzzled against her father the entire time. Eventually walked up to the body. He had to bury him. Citrinespark didn’t know what else to do. Sakura had the same idea. Flickerkit only watched. It wasn’t until they’d filled her grave with the last pawful’s of dirt that a thought entered the deafening silence of his mind: Things would never go back to normal. The horrors of SilverClan had proven worse than anything she might’ve faced in the unknown. And now there was nothing she could do about it. Sakura had known that they had to go. But she stayed here, in camp. And she’d stayed here for Sunstar. “We are going.” Her voice was a hoarse whisper. The molly looked to Flickerkit, who scampered by her heels. Sakura turned and started to walk. She didn’t wait for her. Her sudden iciness stamped on the broken pieces of her heart. Flickerkit didn’t take another step, watching Citri. Waiting. “I’m coming," Sakura didn’t talk to him. Citrinespark never blamed her, or pressured her. She kept the distance that she thought her mother wanted. It was her fault. It was all her fault, for both deaths. They both sunk into endless sorrow. [continued in N + C]
[story continued from instructions, read that first] Tri did her best to make sure that Flickerkit wasn’t crushed by the same pain. She kept him entertained. She’d tell him stories. Sing him songs. Race with him. Whatever she could to keep a smile on his face. Whatever he wanted. Anything to spare him from the sorrow she’d caused. Their progress was slow. Sometimes they’d go in circles to keep in hiding from SilverClan's council - that wandered the territory - or get lost. They began to take breaks. Sakura took frequent breaks. She was tired. Something was wrong with her, Citrine knew. She’d gathered her nerves and looked into her eyes, silently begging for her to tell her what was wrong. She’d never say anything. “I miss Willowkit.” Flickerkit would whisper. He was sorry. “I wish both of them would come back. And things would be normal.” She was so, so sorry. Then she and Flickerkit would curl into a ball of grief, and fall asleep. Sakura was next to them, but it felt more like she wasn’t. The memory of the last time she saw her brother wasn’t whole. It’d been torn to pieces and then haphazardly put back together. She remembered a flash of brown with green eyes. She remembered the fear that flooded his whole being. She remembered his other brother, the betrayer, chase after him, evil in his eyes. That brown flash, running. Him, running. He’d lead it away. Only he caught him by the tail. She remembered screams of pain. He couldn’t move. He’d failed. His gaze lingered on the foliage he saw his attacker heading for. He met the glints of the kits' gaze peeking between the leaves, before someone snatched them away. Then he was carelessly tossed down that endless cliff. She’d never see him again. Before she knew it, he was fading away in a pool of his own blood. He sensed a shadow over him. He presumed it was death. | the end | Lineart: @firepaw_rusty Colouring: me Program: Scratch Bitmap (with a bit of help from vector) Song: House of Memories ~ Panic!
