A fossil was discovered in 1972-1973 and was identified as an Alectrosaurus fossil in 1977, but it was discovered to be a different genus from Alectrosaurus, and was named Khankhuuluu in 2025. It has both basal and derived tyrannosauroid features, and is thought to be very closely related to the evolved tyrannosauroid Eutyrannosaurs such as Gorgosaurus and Tyrannosaurus.
