Book 1 Ch 1 --- "She did NOT just do that!" Is all I could hear booming down the hallway before the angry steps came towards my bedroom door. My mom was furious, I didn't do anything though, I was just enjoying my first day of summer in my room listening to music and drawing as many sketches as I could before lunch. "Where is Renee?" That was the first words I heard my mother say when she slammed open the newly polished doors that she hated when we slammed, she walked over to me and asked again. "Where is Renee?" "I think she said she was going to hang out with some friends at the mall, but I'm not sure. You seemed awfully mad, is there anything you need me to know?" I asked, my voice a bit squeaky, as if I was the one who was screaming halfway down the hall. "She is in an awful lot of trouble, she cheated on a test and flunked math! She never told me and now she needs to go to summer school for 3 weeks." "All that just because she cheated?" I couldn't help but let out a little laugh, a nervous habit I picked up late this year. Suddenly my phone started buzzing just as my mother turned out the door to leave. I picked up my phone and looked at the number it was Ansleigh, my best friend. Her message said: "Lexie, I need to know if you wanna come over NOW!" I wrote back: "Sure I'd love to!" "Mom?" I asked before she was all the way out the door, she turned and looked at me with ice cold eyes that I was sure could freeze someone if they started too long. "Can I hang out with Ansleigh today?" All my mother could do was nod, the way she did when she was relieved. "Be home before dinner though and stay with her!" Her expression lightened into the kind and welcoming smile I loved, the one that welcomed our friends or helped us with homework. The smile that I knew belonged to my mother. "Thank you, and I will! See you soon." I got up and grabbed my phone as well as my purse that contained my money and secret stash of emergency candy, you never know when you will need it. I hoped on my bike that was parked outside of my garage and rode the 7 minute path to Ansleighs, which by now I could do practically with my eyes closed. 5 minutes later --- Suddenly there was a screech and then it went blank. I woke up with a massive headache and Ansleigh, my mother and Renee standing over me. I tried to get up but they told me to stay on the ground. I told them I was fine. They didn't believe me. "What is going on?" I asked in between breaths. "You got into a crash and we called for help." Ansleigh replied with visible relief that I was good enough to talk washed over her once frozen with horror face. "I'm fine, I swear I'm fine!" I got up all the way, breaking through their attempts to restrain me. "See?" Everyone got up with me and like I was a baby they watched over me.
