Sammy is a confident and fast experimental engine originally built by the LMS as part of a short-lived class designed for mixed-traffic work. She was numbered 4790 during her LMS days and later became 44790 under British Railways. Withdrawn in the late 1960s and nearly lost to the cutter’s torch, Sammy was rescued by STH and later acquired by the North Western Railway. Now wearing her distinctive violet-blue livery, Sammy proudly runs as NWR No. 17, often tasked with high-speed specials and expresses where her quick acceleration and daring spirit shine. Though playful and teasing at times, Sammy is reliable under pressure and carries a deep pride in her role on the railway. She’s known to have a unique, melodious whistle and a sleek, modern look that turns heads wherever she steams. While her design stands apart from most NWR engines, Sammy's heart is firmly rooted in the Sodor rails.
