But in a home without the unconditional love of a parent, she’d only become more aloof. She’d look at the world around her, see her siblings striving for Tristesse’s affection at every turn, and she’d realize a truth of her very own. The love of her father would never be hers, no matter how hard she tries. Perhaps it is her fault- perhaps she was simply never destined to be loved. And so, she’d withdraw inwards. If the world does not have space in its heart for her, then why would she bother keeping in hers. Vérité is a very aloof character, independent to the extreme. She firmly believes that she will never be loved, never be good enough to stand with those around her. So instead, she chooses to only rely on herself. She would become a master of self-sufficiency, not because it helps her, but because it protects her from the crushing weight of hope. Hope, after all, is dangerous when it has been crushed too many times. Where others, like her siblings, reach out, Vérité pulls away. Her silence is louder than her words, and even those are often etched with a cool cynicism. But just because she has no desire to get close to others, it doesn’t mean she does not watch them. Vérité would be observant, attuned to even the smallest shift in mood from those around her. It wasn’t out of empathy, no, it was simply a matter of survival. If she could predict how those around her behave, she would be prepared for the pain of unmet expectations. To those around her, she’d seem insightful, but it is driven by her solitude. While Vérité always keeps an emotional barrier between herself and those around her, she isn’t cruel. She'd be courteous, composed, even kind in a detached way. But there would always be a wall, an invisible boundary others cannot cross. Anyone who tries to reach her would find themselves pushed away with a quiet, practiced efficiency. The idea of someone loving her for who she is would feel alien. Dangerous, even. In her effort to protect herself from hoping for love, she’d become much like Tristesse, professional and detached. Somewhere deep inside of her, though, Vérité craves love. A pat on the head from her father, a smile shared between her and her siblings. But she cannot reach for it herself, cannot subject herself to the truth of the matter. She is unlovable, and for that, she shall remain alone. And so, Vérité learns to silence herself preemptively. She becomes the kind of person who never raises her voice, never asks for anything she can't provide herself.
