{ HI } This project is less about the gills themselves and instead focuses on the effects on Abaloneplight of having his right gills clawed. { THE WOUND } A large wound like his will take a long time to heal. I'd estimate that it will take 2 to 3 moons until the healing process is as complete as can be. The wound will scab, become inflamed, form a fresh scar, and gradually fade into a permanent scar as he heals. His right gills will be permanently damaged. { OXYGEN INTAKE } As Abaloneplight's lungs were not impacted in the fight, there will be no impact on his breathing on land. There will definitely be changes in his underwater behavior, though. He will not be able to swim as comfortably or as deep, will have to pop up for air, and if he refuses to do that, will slowly suffocate because of his gills not providing enough oxygen to his blood. Less oxygen intake will be the issue that leads to all these changes. Abaloneplight will first experience a shortness of breath (dyspnea) as his body notices the reduced amount of oxygen in the blood and calls for more. His heartrate would increase, and he would swim faster in an attempt to get more oxygenated water flowing against his gills. The exercise would use up oxygen faster and make things worse. I read about exercise being able to ease the breathing process (probably by strengthening the diaphragm), but I don't think that would work for Abaloneplight because the gills use water flow, and not a muscle, to bring in air. Anyways, Abaloneplight will likely swim to the surface to replenish his oxygen supplies with his lungs instead of his gills. If he doesn't, he will start suffocating. I have read about the symptoms of suffocation, but I will not put much detail here because I do not plan on putting him through that soon and it is a bit of a tangent. Suffocation symptoms can include headaches, confusion, and a blue tinge to skin.
