That summer day seemed to last forever. Lying in his arms, sitting by the surf, watching the seagulls fly by. But I wasn't naive. I could see it in his eyes, in the way we lingered here, under this burning sun. It would soon k!ll us, this love, and we knew it. His arm was still around my shoulder, my hand hovering over his heart. I sat there, unmoving, for a while before he noticed. "What's wrong?" I shook my head. "It's nothing." He turned to me, those blue-green eyes, sharp as sea glass, piercing mine. "You know that's not true." I held back my sigh and moved my gaze to the horizon. The sky was clear, but already the sun was sinking under the sea. “Just tell me what’s wrong,” he said, voice low. I closed my eyes briefly, but I could still see the sun, a halo of orange in my vision. Then, I opened them. "I can't do this." He grabbed me as I stood. "What?" The heat was stifling as I made my way out to the waves. He was right behind me, yelling my name, but I didn't hear him. A day of light wasted, that's what this had been. We had been immortal, once, when I’d loved him. Now, I would never love again, not while the sun blinded my judgement and stung at my skin. "Where are you going?" he yelled. I turned slowly to meet his eyes. "Home." His eyes glinted in the light, but he stayed silent, even as I slipped out of his grip. I walked back to the shoreline, not letting the waves carry me back. I watched as the ocean faded into the distance, as the colors danced across the sky, as the sun sunk to a half-moon in the waves. Our immortality under this summer sun would d!e, now. But I knew I would always end up here, somehow, dreaming of this day for all of eternity. Because that’s what summer does to you–it burns to the bone. // so i wrote this w the most dangerous writing app for 5 mins !! i edited it a bit after ,, but the prompt i got was originally "that summer seemed to last forever" . based this story around a breakup taking place on the summer solstice , or the longest day of the year since i thought itd be interesting + what was immediately came to mind ! tbh it doesnt really make sense uh . music is rockland by gracie abrams , not really fitting the "summer" vibe but it hits
