It was the first day of 7th grade. Estelle walked in to school, already imagining what she would do when she got home. The first days were always the most boring. ‘Here’s my class room procedures and some information about me’ ‘let’s get to know about you all’ Blah blah blah. It was all the same thing, repeated every year. Honestly a waste of time. Most people knew how all the teachers and classes operated already. The time would be better spent doing actual work, Estelle thought. Plus she hated filling out those about me worksheets. She barely even knows what she wants to do tomorrow so how is she supposed to decide on a career to work towards? Anyways, Estelle walked to her homeroom and sat down at a seat near the back of the class. As she mentally prepared herself to listen to 7 hours of teachers talking about classroom procedures, her friend River sat down next to her. “Oh, hey Riv, I didn’t know you had Mr. Adkins for homeroom.” Estelle was pleasantly surprised. At least for one class of the day she would have someone she already knows to talk to. She didn’t really want to make new friends. It's not that she hates talking to new people, it's just she never really knows what to say to get the conversation started so they usually just sit in awkward silence ignoring each other. Whenever she normally starts conversations it's just her talking about one of her current obsessions, and she doesn’t want to do that to a stranger. They will think she is weird and won’t really care about what she’s saying. Or worse, pretend to care about what she’s talking about. Thats the worst. “Yeah, I’m glad you’re here, that makes everything a lot easier. Anyways, a new family moved in next door. I think they have a daughter that is our age, or at least close to our age.” River explained happily, fixing the way his blond hair looked. It was obvious he missed going to school, he usually enjoys school. Estelle doesn’t understand him sometimes. “Oh really? Did you talk to her yet? Is she cool?” River’s old neighbors were an old married couple. They moved away a few months ago to go live near their children in a different state. It was a shame, Estelle thought. The couple knew River’s family and they were friends so they always gave popsicles to River and Estelle when they were outside for hours on end to help fight the general hotness of summer. The house had been on the market for almost a year by now. “No, I haven’t had a chance to talk to her yet. I mean I'm sure her family is going to be focused on unpacking and settling in. She probably wants to help.” “Yeah that would make sense. But why would they move in on the last day of summer? That seems like the worst time possible. I mean think about it, Riv, you would not only have to adjust to a new school but also a completely new town. That would be the worst.” “Not to mention you would spend all of your time either at school or unpacking. Just non-stop work for like 12 hours straight.” River added, agreeing with Estelle’s statement. What type of parents decides the last day of summer is the best to move in their family. Obviously the kids would be exhausted. Estelle and River kept talking about the new girl and making guesses about how she acts. Before they knew it, homeroom ended and they had to part ways and go to their next class.
