Read this first or you will be totally lost: *For 2 Players *The black player has to capture the white king by surrounding him with his soldiers on all 4 sides, while the white player has to get his king to safety in one of the corner squares. *All pieces can move an unlimited distance vertically or horizontally but not diagonally. You may capture enemy pieces by moving one of your pieces on either side of the enemy, once again horizontally or vertically but not diagonally. You may, however, move into the gap between two enemy pieces without being captured. Also note the king must be surrounded on all four sides, not just two, to be captured. *Only the king may enter the four corner escape squares and the central throne square. However, he may not go back to the throne square once he has left it. You may sandwich enemies, including the king, between one of your pieces and the throne or an escape square to capture them, but the same does not go for the board edges.
Hnefatafl is an old Norse board game intended to depict a Viking raid on a coastal town, though many variants exist with different settings, and was widely played in northern Europe until the introduction of chess. As it is such an old game, there are few records but many interpretations of the rules, but this is how I first learned to play. In case anyone asks, no I will not give it online multiplayer or a singleplayer AI, remix these in if you really want to ;) There is a minor bug where the game won't register that a piece has been picked up. In this case, wait a short moment and try again, it will eventually work and will not break the game in any way, it's purely visual
