She was almost always the second latest to arrive for band practice. Latest being Melanie, the "manager" for the band, who had snakes for hair, which is what Lucy figured got her into the school automatically. Hard to hide snake hair from the mortals, after all. Pushing open the door, she heard quiet, almost inaudible sobs coming from inside. She looked around and gasped. Melanie was kneeling on the floor sobbing, surrounded by no less than five stone statues that looked suspiciously like the werewolf jocks who had bullied Lucy in her first year. And behind them, was someone she knew all too well, now turned to dark rock. "Red?" Lucy murmured, her voice cracking. Melanie, curse her superior hearing, must have heard her, but she didn't turn around, instead scrambling to put her sunglasses back on. "Melanie, you can keep your sunglasses off, I could just do a protection spell." Lucy offered. "T-thanks," The snake-haired girl replied, shaking. Lucy muttered maybe half of a verse from 'You're On Your Own, Kid', her go-to protection spell (it was awfully nice of whoever gave her magic to make it work with her taste in music), and walked across the room to her favorite (not that she had more than one) manager. "Can you fix them?" Melanie whispered. "Unless something goes terribly wrong - and knowing my luck, it will -, I should be able to," Lucy assured her. "But what happened?" "I-I was waiting for you guys to show up," She sniffled, "and those guys just came in and started being jerks a-and..." She trailed off. "It's alright, Mel," "They k-kept calling you and Red a bunch of r-really mean things, too, and I got mad and..." Melanie buried her face in Lucy's shoulder. Lucy got up, gently pulling away from her friend, and surveyed the damage. She went around to the statues of the jocks - jerks, more like, she thought bitterly - and started singing. Bring Me to Life, by Evanescence, was a reanimation spell, technically. She had discovered it when she went through had a necromancy phase in fourth grade. But she learned just the summer before now that it worked plenty well on someone who was petrified, too. So she went about, mumbling the lyrics to each statue, watching as the statues melted back into humans. An argument could be made to call them monsters, for more reason than one, but Lucy shoved down her anger. She had more important things to work on. By the third, the room was starting to spin. Whatever, she could manage. By the time she stumbled over to Red, she shook almost as bad as Melanie, and the sounds of the confused werewolves sounded like everyone was underwater, but she still got onto her tippy toes (Red was quite a bit taller than her) and rested her head on her girlfriend's shoulder, and she sang. Her voice was hoarse and she could barely stand, but she kept singing until she felt Red moving beneath her. "What happened?" Red asked, sounding farther away by the second. Lucy felt her knees buckle and she crumpled to the floor like a discarded piece of paper. "Lucy?" Red sounded miles away now, even though she was kneeling beside her. There were spots in Lucy's vision and then nothing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Red couldn't quite remember what happened, but Lucy was on her shoulder and shaking. Could've sworn she heard crying, too. "What happened?" Red asked, moving to wrap an arm around her, but she was too slow. Lucy collapsed, her head hitting the floor ~hard~. Was that blood seeping out from under her, or was Red panicking over the reflection off of the tile? After a moment of shock, she kneeled beside Lucy, watching her eyes closed for what Red could only hope wouldn't be the last time. "Lucy?" She whispered, of at least tried to; it came out as more of a strangled yelp. "What happened to her?" Red demanded, glaring at Melanie. "I-I accidentally turned you and some jerks from the football team to stone, and s-she had to do some spells to f-fix it," admitted the trembling manager. "How many?" Red questioned. She knew that after three spells or so, it got ~extremely~ dangerous for Lucy to use any more magic. Last time she'd been in the infirmary for a week just after four! "Six, I think," Red was ~this~ close to going up and strangling Melanie herself, when Lucy twitched and whimpered in her sleep. [more in notes and credits]
(A/N: this timeskip is brought to you by raid shadow legends [jk i just didn't want to crash out more than i already was]) Red hadn't left Lucy's side since she brought her to the infirmary - much to the nurse, Miss Bones's dismay. Just stared at the love of her life practically comatose on a hospital bed, gripping Lucy's hand a little too tight. She might've cried. Red didn't cry very much, and she sure didn't like admitting it. But she did break down a little. Or a lot. Maybe completely. Lucy was whimpering in her sleep every couple of minutes, and she'd screamed at least twice. Bad dreams, maybe? Red knew some people at this school could get prophetic dreams, and she sure hoped her girlfriend wasn't one of them. She was about to get up and leave - Miss Bones's nagging finally getting to her - when she heard a voice mumble her name. "Lucy?" She whispered, turning back. She was reaching blindly out from her blankets. Red sat back down and held her hand again. It was colder than usual, which was saying something, considering Lucy's eternally freezing hands. It was probably unconscious, Red decided. Just habit when she was having a bad dream. "I'm sorry," Red whispered, starting to cry again, "Sorry that I keep getting us into trouble and sorry that you keep getting hurt because of me and I probably annoy you to death with my stupid plans and I-" She felt Lucy's hand squeeze hers. "Stop..." she said in a hoarse whisper. "Not... fault..." "You're awake!" Red exclaimed, wrapping her arms around her. She winced when Red brought her arms around to her sides. "Are you okay?" "...Water..." Lucy coughed, and Red grabbed a cup from the nightstand and filled it from the conveniently placed water pitcher beside it. Lucy held it up to her mouth but was shaking so badly that it started dribbling down her chin as well. Red didn't say anything, just wiped it away and held the cup steady with her other hand. "Better?" Red asked. Lucy nodded, wincing as her hands brushed her ribs on the way down from her mouth. "What happened to your side?" She interrogated. Lucy lifted her wrinkled t-shirt, just enough for Red to see her ribs. Red gasped. Oh, gods. There were bruises in every shade of the rainbow decorating her entire left side, a gruesome backdrop to the winding scars that traced her ribs. "What happened to you, darling?" Lucy shrugged and smiled sadly. "Just what happens when you use too much magic." Red still was ~very~ concerned, and her face must've shown it, because it was seemingly Lucy's turn to ask, "What the matter?" "You've been out for at least half a day, Lucy, did you know that?" She breathed. "You're kidding," "Nope," "It is not your fault about any of the things that happened, since you were so adamant about that earlier. I am in full control of my own life, and if I want to make stupid decisions with you, who's going to stop me?" "Common sense, maybe?" Red suggested. "Never heard of it," "You're an idiot," She declared. "Love you, too, Roxxanne," Lucy said, and smiled. Music: Bring Me To Life - Evanescence Soon You'll Get Better (feat. Also, I felt like crying. also, sorry but i've kinda lost all motivation to write this series so apologies for that but there'll be a new series soon probably.
