humanity's natural instinct is to fight and fear eyes in the dark. this trait was evolved to fend off predators in the night, who usually didn't have one specific target in mind. they were just hunting for food because they were worried about their own survival, not unlike this primal fear, also just trying to help us survive. the machine is different. its hunts have goals and purpose. its hunts are fueled with an ancient hate and rage. it hunts with ambition and target.
