Est Unus Ex Nobis. Nos Defendat Eius. All children are underestimated. No adult could ever know the abilities of a 9-year-old child. Marie liked that, they never knew what she had in store for them. She enters her father’s room with a pochon filled with lavender from the garden outside their house. “Papa! I got you something!” she handed him the pochon “Oh, mon ange, it’s lovely,” he held on tight to the little bag filled with lavender. Louis Williams was drafted into the army in 1939 and now, he was off for battle again. “Do you like them?” Marie asked “I do. They were your mother’s favorites.” Nicole Williams died of cancer while giving birth to Marie, or so she was told. “When I grow up, I want to be brave like you!” “You’re already brave, mon ange, so very brave.” “Promise you’ll come back? I’m scared..” “You must be strong. You have the heart of a warrior,” her father said. They lived isolated from everyone else, content with their small little world. He was the only family she ever had. But she would be strong. For him, she would be strong. Marie’s father opened his arms, an invitation for a hug. She leapt into the embrace and kept a death grip on him. Marie knew that her papa probably wouldn’t come back. She knew that this was probably the last hug she’ll ever give him. She knew, but still, she hoped.
