Entomology, aka the study of insects, is a large field with a variety of branches. These include taxonomy, morphology, and genetics. But today, we will be talking about bugs. Not to be confused with the generic term for insects, TRUE bugs are known for having a sharp straw that can stab through skin. These include ticks, assassin bugs, and many more. But this begs the question, where did the term bug come from, and why is it frequently used for insects and so many other things? Well, the term “bug” originated from the old welsh word “bwg”, and was used to describe something scary or eerie. This welsh word eventually made its way into English, and was there when insects were being sorted into their main classes. The “scarier” bugs that have those straws, like bed bugs, as they were common around that time, fell into that category. Over time, the word “bug” began being used for other things, like sickness or annoyance. You can probably now see that people then started referring to all insects as bugs due to their unusual and scary features. However, despite their odd appearances, you should go give these “bugs” some love. (Side note: don’t try to touch them, they may sting or bite. Unless you really know what you’re doing.)
