My fire powers/Ch 1 Hi! My name is Lily! And I have a— “Lily! Time for lunch!” Oh right… I forgot to tell you about my family. It’s me, my mom, my dad, and my older sister, Bella. Mom is super strict and likes everything perfect, Dad tells bad jokes all the time, and Bella—well—she’s kind of bossy but she means well. Anyway, as I was saying… I have a special power. Whenever I get mad, I can shoot fire out of my hands, and my eyes turn bright red. Cool, right? Well… not really. Because my parents don’t know about it. “LILY! I SAID TIME FOR LUNCH!” Oops. I think Mom’s getting mad. Better go. I’ll tell you more about my powers after lunch. When I walked into the kitchen, the smell of spaghetti filled the air. Mom was setting plates down, and Dad was humming some tune. Bella sat there scrolling on her phone, barely looking up. “What took you so long, Lily?” Mom asked sharply. “I… I went to the bathroom?” I said, forcing a smile. She sighed. “Anyway, tomorrow we’re going to the city church. Everyone will be there. You know how important it is.” “Great,” I muttered. Bella looked up. “You should wear something nice for once.” I rolled my eyes. “I’ll be excused for a sec, okay?” Mom waved her hand. “Fine, just don’t take forever.” Okay… the reason I’m scared about tomorrow is because of my powers. Crowds make me anxious. And when I get anxious, I get angry—and when I get angry, I burn. Literally. My hands heat up, my eyes glow, and everything shimmers. I took a deep breath. “Just stay calm,” I whispered. But then— “WHO TOOK MY LIP GLOSS?!” It was Bella. She was glaring at me, arms crossed. “I didn’t take it!” I said quickly. “I knew you took it! You always steal my stuff!” “No, I didn’t! Please trust me!” She rolled her eyes. “Yeah right, little liar.” Something inside me snapped. My chest felt hot, my palms started to tingle, and the air around me shimmered like summer heat. I clenched my fists and turned away. “I’m going to the restroom,” I said through my teeth. I ran down the hallway and into an empty bathroom stall. My hands were glowing faintly orange now. I splashed cold water on them, but the steam just hissed up in little clouds. “Oh no,” I whispered. “Not again.” I looked in the mirror. My eyes were glowing red—bright, fiery red. Then I heard footsteps behind me. “Lily?” a voice said softly. I spun around. It wasn’t Bella, or Mom, or Dad. It was a boy about my age, standing by the door. He had dark hair—and his eyes glowed red too. He smiled slightly. “You’re not the only one.”
