(CW: Strong Emotions, Mentions of War and Army) Ship’s Log. Spring 44. Late Afternoon. Breadstick. Splinter is not talking to Tatters anymore. “How dare he!” she kept saying, her face pinking. “That (unrepeatable word) told me he’d never take me to the (unrepeatable word) Catpital! How dare he! FURBALLS!” (For your information, the incident I’m currently recording ended five minutes ago.) “He isn’t taking you, Splinter,” Galleon pointed out. He has stopped crying but his voice is still thick. “He’s just going to officially enlist.” Splinter buried her face in her paw pads. She twitched her tail. “Great furry Godcats! I HAVE to go! How else am I gonna drag our First Mate back from certain death? First Cap’n, now TATTERS!” Mackerel made a silly excuse about needing more berries. She went to pick them and is now sulking in Very Berry Valley, I bet. Just then, the door opened. It was Tatters. Everyone looked at him with wide red eyes. Galleon looked sad. Splinter looked angry. I did not know which I was. Maybe both. “Hey, guys,” Tatters said, trying to sound casual. His voice wavered, though. “I just wanted to explain—“ But Splinter cut him off, snapping. “Explain WHAT? How you’re abandoning your family for the navy? How you’re leaving m—us behind?” I was surprised she was talking to him, but I suppose yelling doesn’t count as talking. Tatters took a step closer, but Splinter turned her back on him, refusing to meet his gaze. His ears twitched and swiveled for no reason. His tail curled, lashed, all contradicting his clear emotions. “You don’t get it!” she hissed, her voice trembling, the pink spots of color back high up her face. “You’re leaving us for the army. You’re going to die! You’re LEAVING US LIKE CAP’N DID!” “I’m not abandoning anyone!” Tatters insisted, his voice rising slightly. “I’m doing this for all of us! I thought you’d understand!” “Understand?” Splinter’s voice was sharp. “You think I want to sit here and wait while you go off to get yourself killed? Fighting dogs?” I’ll spare you the rest of the fight. In fact, I’ll end this record in a bit. Tatters stomped out not angrily, but sadly. He shut the door, not slammed it. And THAT is how we lost our captain AND our first mate. Godcats help us.
