CHAPTER TWO “Emokit, wake up!” Poppyseed called. Emokit blinked. She saw Owlkit leaping up and down in excitement. “Owlkit?” She stirred, stretching her hind legs. “Emokit! It’s almost sunhigh! Great Starclan, it’s almost moon high!” The pale brown tom looked like he might explode. “Owlkit, don’t be ridiculous.” Shallowstone rolled her eyes. “It’s barely climbing-sun.” Emokit looked out the nursery window, which was draped with lichen vines. “I think the deputy is assigning the dawn patrols.” Emokit noticed. “ Okay, let's go then.” Owlkit scurried off. Just after the deputy assigned the patrols, as the cats cleared out of camp, it left it quite quiet. EmoKit nudged Owlkit, they would get the apprentice ceremony tomorrow, which left them in excitement. It was almost impossible for Emokit to sleep, she was too excited about the ceremony. The next day, Emokit woke up restless, she bounced onto her paws. “Today is the day!” she exclaimed. She skittered over to Owlkit, batting at his face. He murmured something, and soon got up. They slithered out of the dens, waiting for the moment. Emokit shifted her weight from her paws as she saw Silverstar emerging from her den, her deputy, Flamefeather trailing close behind. She leaped up on the highledge, which was a dusty rock emerging from the leader’s den. “She’s coming!” Owlkit hissed in Emokit’s ear. “Shut up, I want to hear her!” The huge gray she-cat leaped on top of the HighLedge, her legs dangling off. The she-cat hauled herself uponto the stone. “Let all cats enough to catch their own prey, gather under the HighLedge for a clan meeting!” The leader yowled. “It’s time!” Emokit was unable to contain her excitement as she blurted out. Purrs of amusement rippled from the crowd of cats that gathered around them. Silverstar flicked her silver tail and pierced Emokit with her bright yellow gaze. “Emokit,” she began. Emokit looked around the grassy clearing. Wrengwing and Poppyseed gazed at her, pride filling their eyes. Shallowstone sat crouching next to them, her tail twitching. “Step forward. From this moment on, you will be known as Emopaw. Badgerclaw, step forward.” Oh no! Emopaw thought, shuddering. “Are you okay?” Owlkit whispered. “Yes, just nervous,” Emopaw lied. “Badgerclaw, you shall mentor Emopaw.” Emopaw glanced at the white-and-black tom. His jaw was curved in a snarl. “You have mentored apprentices many times before, and they have grown to be amazing warriors. I hope that you will do the same to dear Emopaw.” Badgerclaw recluctlantly stepped forward. Emopaw touched noses with her mentor. The huge tom did the same, but Emopaw could sense the anger running through his body. “Owlkit, step forward.” Owlkit bounded forward, his jaw curved into a smile. Shallowstone leaped forward to cuff Owlkit around the ear. The she-cat let go, making Owlkit tumble into the dirt. Embarrassed, Owlkit stood back up and forced his fur to lie flat. Silverstar chuckled as she went on, “You shall now be known as Owlpaw. Flamefeather, as my deputy, I have been hesitant to give you a mentor. But I think Owlpaw is perfect for you.” Owlpaw trembled in excitement as Flamefeather neared, his fiery coat blazing in the sunlight of sunhigh. Owlpaw stood on his hind legs to touch noses with Flamefeather, but fell in the process. Emopaw laughed as Owlpaw struggled. “Clan dismissed,” Silverstar called, swishing her tail in amusement. “What are we doing first?” Owlkit mewed to Flamefeather. “I was thinking we could take a tour of the territory.” The deputy said. “Can Emopaw come with us?” “Only if Badgerclaw agrees,” Owlpaw and Flamefeather turned their heads. “I suppose,” The tom growled. They headed toward the entrance, Emopaw trailed closely behind Badgerclaw, and Owlpaw bounded far ahead of Flamefeather. “Don't go too far, you could get lost.” Flamefeather warned. Badgerclaw sniffed the air, his jaw half open. “Prey’s running well,” he noticed. “We could teach the apprentices how to hunt.” “That sounds fun!” Emopaw exclaimed. Owlpaw attempted to crouch, “You look like a frog,” Badgerclaw snickered. “Put your tail down, and your ears. You want to be as close to the ground as possible” Flamefeather advised, glaring at Badgerclaw. Emopaw’s gaze drifted to a close oak tree. A squirrel! She dropped into a crouch, creeping closer to the tree, her ears twitched as the squirrel turned, with a quick leap she hooked the squirrel with her claws. With a swift bite, the light died from the animal’s eyes.
