Darkness constricted around him as he felt his limbs slowly disappearing. He tried to see what was left of him to reveal nothing; just an empty void. Obviously, Kael started to panic. He started to twist and turn in an attempt to bring his limbs back. He felt something growing on his back–to be exact, two things. He felt light starting to appear in the distance as the darkness started to clear up like fog. What in the name of god is happening? Kael thought as the bright blue sky had finally become visible, and he could hear the melodies of birds in the distance; their cants so different but so similar at the same time. But his thoughts were cut short as he figured out he was floating in the sky. “What the—” Before he could process it, he was falling–fast. He started to panic. “I think this is a bad time to have a fear of heights.” Branches flew past him, scrapping and snapping as he hit tree after tree. Pain lanced through him with each hit, until finally the ground came rushing up–and everything went black for the second time. “H-hello? Oh–!” “Come on! get u–!” Voices pierced through the haze as Kael finally blinked awake to reveal a girl–one or two years older than him–knelt down beside him, investigating his unconscious body. Kael groaned, rubbing his head. “Ow… pretty sure I broke every bone in my body. Twice.” The girl tilted her head. “You’re alive though.” “Yay me,” he muttered. He pushed himself up, wincing. “So, uh… do random people always fall from the sky here, or am I just lucky?” “...I don’t understand what the right answer to that question is,” The girl said, side-eyeing. “Look, doll-face. I have some business to do, so if you could please leave my non-working body alone and leave; that’d be awesome.” The girl frowned, “Wow. Ok, hotshot. I guess I’ll just let you bleed out next time, see if you’ll learn that you have wings,” she said, shaking her head, a small smirk playing on her lips as she slowly stepped away. “I have wings?!” Kael turned around as fast as he could to reveal that he really did have wings. Oh, that’s what I felt growing on my back! Kael sighed as the girl walked away. “Finally! Some space! Now to figure out where the heck I am.” He helped himself up with a nearby tree, stepped forward, and landed flat on his face. Stupid broken bones and stupid trees, he swore under his breath. Kael groaned, sitting up and rubbing his face. “Okay… maybe I do need a little help here.” He looked toward where the girl had walked and called out, trying to sound casual but failing miserably. “Hey! Uh… could you, maybe… help me get up? Please?”

Not much happens in this chapter, but if you recognize any strong traits like Kael’s in yourself—especially in other chapters—it might be helpful to talk to someone. Remember, you’re not alone.
