I believe that the code cubes are actually power nodes. 2. The Evidence First off, the fact that they become dull and bleak after collection might be a parallel to real world machines darkening when deactivated hints at them powering off when Kirby collects them. Another bit of proof is that Haltmann hid them in special confined areas. If they were keys, couldn't he just move them and bring them elsewhere? Nope, the cubes had to be left there to power his machines. Combining these with their in-game use makes for a theory I think works well.
